Poem #14 Bird Chorus at Lake Hattah

Sulphur Crested Cockatoo

Sulphur Crested Cockatoo

Bird Chorus at Lake Hattah

Australian Ravens
Mournfully winging their way
Across the parched land.

Noisy Miners
Shrieking their way
From tree to tree.

Galahs painting
Pink lines
Across an azure sky.

Sulphur Crested Cockatoos
Raucously piercing the morning air
With alarm calls.

Dusky Woodswallows
Twittering their chorus
High above.

Regent Parrots
Streaking the sky
With arrows of gold.

Kookaburras
Laughing their way
In a new dawn chorus.

Mallee Ringnecks
Clinking the treetops
With bell like calls overhead.

White Winged Choughs
Strutting on parade, squabbling
As they inspect each campsite.

Drowsy campers
Stirring in their sleeping bags.
No need for an alarm clock!

Poem #13 Time

Time

Time is like
An everlasting tide,
Washing away
The sands of our memory.

Poem #12 Rain on Rose Petals

Rose in our garden

Rose in our garden

Rain on Rose Petals

I stand
In the soft
Morning light
With raindrops
Softly trickling
Down my face
Cool and sweet
(Lip-lick delight).

I stoop
In the soft
Morning light
To watch
Gentle droplets
Caressing rose petals
Lingeringly
(Love-stroke delight).

I bend
In the soft
Morning light
To catch
The sun’s
Early rays
In pink petal dazzle
(Diamond delight).

I drink deeply from its fine perfume.

Poem #11 Our Child

Our Child

How can it be
That so tiny a baby
Can grow into someone like her?

She was once
Our bundle of joy
Soft, delicate
And so small.

But now!

Such a tornado
Of endless energy,
Of endless busyness,
So alert and alive,
So bouncingly full
Of rough and tumble.

She entered our lives
Quietly and unobtrusively.
But now she disrupts everything
With a smile and a giggle,
A toy crash for attention
Or a loud piercing shriek of delight.

Her day is filled
With a thousand discoveries,
A hundred accidents
And a handful of tearful tragedies
As well as an occasional parental crisis.

And is that our child
So quietly sleeping?

Poem #10 On Arising While Camping

On Arising While Camping

“Good morning, dear sir.
Welcome to the new day,”
Carolled Mister Magpie
On my emergence
From my sleepy cacoon.
